PRE AUTUMN WINTER 2017
Pre Autumn Winter 2017
Amy Powney found a photograph of her father wearing old 70s jeans, sitting shirtless on a motorbike in the back garden of her childhood home.
Inspired by the denim and the hardware of the bike contrasting with delicate pink flowers and the greenery of the garden Powney set to work, initially developing the denim looks of the collection, and the jackets drawing on the biker theme.
Using heavy navy cottons she has designed utilitarian jumpsuits and trousers elevated with luxurious fabrication. The hardware which spreads throughout the collection came from the mechanics of the bike made sumptuous using gold rivets fastened with velvet ribbons.
Synonymous with Powney’s design process, she drew upon the memories of her home evoked through the photograph to use upholstery weight jacquards, knits and floral prints to create coats, dresses, jumpers, trousers and all in ones.
Thus the collection fuses the 1970s style of her father and her early childhood in the 1980s. As ever, hints of 90s trends peek through with an idiosyncratic nod to Powney's trendy teenage years: skinny trousers flared at the ankle, long bell sleeves and nipped in waists create a new direction for Mother of Pearl’s silhouettes.
Ultimately this pre fall 2017 collection has an innate sense of ease and richness, consolidating many of Powney’s inspirations that give Mother of Pearl its identity.
